What is a Sinus Lift?

Sinus lifts are a surgical procedure in which a periodontist or trained dentist adds bone to your upper jaw. This procedure is used in order to make space for dental implants. There are maxillary sinuses which exist inside both sides of the nose. Extra bone is added between the maxillary sinuses and your jaw. This is also known as a sinus augmentation.

What is Sinus Lift Surgery Used for?

It is used to make space for the dental implant when there is not enough space between the jaw and the sinus. This procedure is used in the following circumstances:

The space above the molar and premolar is not enough because of the structure of the head
Tooth loss over a period of time may result in absorbing the bone back into the body
Some disease may have resulted in loss of bone
In older age the sinus also gets larger so there is less space available for the dental implant

What Are the Risks?

Though this procedure is done under strict supervision and by experienced professionals, there is a slight chance of certain risks occurring during the procedure. The bone that is required to be used for the sinus uplift has to be taken from another area of your mouth or from an external source, such as artificial bone. Due to the invasive nature of the procedure, there are many pain control methods available.

This treatment is carried out with the highest level of safety and care in mind. Some of the risks include, but are not limited to:

Infection of the gums or of the sinuses may occur. However, this is uncommon and patients are observed diligently after the procedure to ensure there are no signs of possible infection
There is a small risk of the sinus membrane being punctured during the procedure. In the unlikely circumstances that this occurs, treatment may be stopped or additional work may have to be done before completing the procedure. But again this is very unlikely and the treatment is carried out with extreme precaution
