Why have orthodontic treatment?

The benefits of teeth straightening are numerous. Bite issues, such as an overbite or underbite, can cause jaw problems and tooth wear. Orthodontics can realign the jaw as well as correct the position of teeth.

Types of orthodontic treatment

We have gone away from the days of the traditional bulky metal braces which would often cause discomfort and wouldn’t be very aesthetically pleasing. We are now able to offer invisible aligners and tooth-coloured braces that still give you the straight teeth you are after, but make the treatment far more enjoyable, comfortable, and discreet!

Fixed braces – Most of us associate fixed braces with orthodontic treatment. When it comes to correcting alignment issues and problematic bites, fixed braces are incredibly effective and reliable. Metal fixed braces are a common choice for teeth straightening due to their versatility and ability to correct a multitude of issues. They are also affordable and provide long-lasting results.
Metal braces – These consist of metal brackets that are attached to the front surface of the teeth and thin metal wires held in place with elastics. Brackets are now generally smaller than they once were, and they can also be customised with coloured elastics.
Clear braces – A more discreet option, clear braces use clear, plastic brackets in place of metal ones and tooth-coloured wires instead of plain metal. This option is perfect for adults and teens alike who need to have braces but are worried about how they look.
Damon braces – These braces are ‘self-ligating’ which means you don’t need to have elastic ties fitted on the brackets, making them much smaller than traditional braces. There’s no need to visit for tightening as they do all this themselves. Damon braces can be metal or clear.

Clear aligners – For patients wishing to achieve a straight smile without worrying about how the braces look, clear aligners such as Invisalign, are a superb method of moving teeth. These clear aligners can work for both arches. These aligners work through gradual movements achieve through a set of different aligners, each set moving the teeth a bit further each time. The number of sets needed, as well as the time it takes for the treatment, depends on the amount of movement.
Lingual braces – The lingual braces are special fixed braces that fit on the inside of your teeth, hidden from view when you smile. The brackets are custom-made, moulding perfectly to the shape of your teeth, providing a comfortable fit.
Children’s braces – We offer a range of braces for children, including Damon Braces, 6 Month Smiles, STb lingual braces, and more. Braces can boost your child’s confidence about their appearance and improve their oral health as the teeth are easier to clean after orthodontics. It’s best to sort out any issues with their teeth as early as possible because it is far easier to realign teeth at a younger age. What is orthodontics?

What is an orthodontist?

What happens at my first orthodontic appointment?

Your mouth will be examined to assess the issues. You may need to have some X-rays taken. Your orthodontist will then explain the different treatment options available to you and answer any questions or concerns you may have.

How long will orthodontic treatment take?

Simple straightening can sometimes be completed within six months, particularly when it’s only the front six teeth that need to shift. It can take between 12 months to 2 years to get the teeth to bite in a better way and to work in harmony with the jaws and lips.

Is orthodontic treatment painful?

You can expect some tenderness and aching as the teeth start to move but this usually wears off in the first few days after fitting and adjusting. Fitting the brace is usually not painful and no anaesthetic is required.
