Your child’s first dentist appointment

Back to posts

Your child’s first dentist appointment is an important occasion. However, there can be concerns or questions regarding what exactly will take place during the visit, and when you should begin taking your child to the dentist. In this article, we will look at when your child should begin going to the dentist, and what you can expect to happen during your child’s first dentist appointment.

When should my child begin going to the dentist?

Generally speaking, you should begin taking your child to the dentist once they are one year old, or when their milk teeth first start to come through. According to NHS guidelines, your child should have visited the dentist at least once by the age of two.

The reasons for your child seeing the dentist at such an early age is to both get them used to the environment and being around a dentist, as well as keeping on top of their oral health, which is essential for newly developing teeth. This can be done in the form of advice given by your dentist regarding brushing techniques and eating healthily, or by applying treatments to prevent tooth decay such as fluoride varnish applied to the teeth, which is very beneficial in strengthening enamel on the teeth.

What can I expect from the first visit?

The first visit to the dentist is usually quite short and doesn’t involve much treatment. It is more of an opportunity to integrate your child into the environment comfortably, and for them to get to meet their dentist in a friendly and controlled way.

Depending on the dentist, you may be asked to either wait outside in the waiting room, so your dentist can build up more of a relationship with your child, or you may be asked to stay and hold your child whilst they are being examined.

During the examination, the dentist will begin looking for signs of tooth decay, how well your child’s teeth are coming in, and any existing or potential problems involving the child’s bite, gums and oral tissue. Once this is completed, the dentist will then begin giving the parents advice on how to stay up to date with their child’s oral health, discussing basic practices such as brushing techniques, developmental stages, teething and any other questions that need answering.

During the check-up, you will be asked to fill out medical forms and provide health information on your child, so it is essential to bring the right documentation for your child.

Your dentist is there to help with any questions you may have regarding your child’s oral health, so it is important to make the most of your visit if you have any concerns.
