Dentures or implants?

Dentures and dental implants are the most popular options for replacing missing teeth. Both come with their own benefits and are very viable substitutes, but which one is the best for you? In this article, we will look at the pros and cons of dentures and dental implants, to help you in making an informed decision about what option is best.

Choosing dentures- pros and cons

Dentures are the oldest substitutes for missing teeth, and their use has been recorded as far back as the 7th century BC. They are designed to give back functionality for the mouth as well as improving upon aesthetic appearance.

Dentures are kept in place using an adhesive or a paste, as without this the dentures are inclined to move out of place when you are speaking or eating. If you have few teeth remaining, then you can opt for partial dentures to be fitted. However, partial dentures can be detrimental to your oral health, as if they are not fitted properly, they can promote dental decay and gum disease.

Some benefits of wearing dentures include strengthening weak jaws and gumlines, and creating the illusion of having a full set of healthy teeth. Recent advances in dentistry allow for false teeth to look completely natural, giving a much less conspicuous look. The cost of dentures are considerably less than dental implants, but will need to be replaced every few years.

Dental implants – pros and cons

Dental implant treatments are the modern solution to replace or correct missing teeth. Dental implants differ to dentures, as rather than acting as a false set of teeth, implants offer an actual replacement for your missing teeth. Implants are fused into the gum or jaw, acting as a type of anchor for the dental crowns to be fitted. This is a better long-term solution, as the implants will not slip or move out of place.

In terms of maintenance, implants require very little. They do not need to be replaced or require any special cleaning, so as long as you care for them as you would for your natural teeth. Therefore, dental implants can last a very long time.

Dental implants are more costly then dentures, which is why dentures are often the more favourable choice. However, with the maintenance involved with dentures, the costs do add up, so dental implants could actually be more preferable financially in the long run.

Both dental implants and dentures have their benefits and draw backs, but through research of the pricing and the procedures involved, this will help you further in making a fully informed decision. In any case, if you have missing teeth or are suffering from oral health problems, make sure to get in touch with your dentist as soon as possible to rectify these issues.
