There is no specialist register that dentists need to be on to place dental implants. However, not every dentist will offer this type of treatment, as they won’t have the required skill, knowledge and confidence to offer dental implants.
Dental implants are a very complex treatment and its to no surprise that not all dentists will be offering this treatment. Our resident implant dentist, Dr Faresh Desai has been successfully placing implants over the years. In 2013 he was awarded a Diploma in Implant Dentistry with Advanced Certificate in Bone Grafting from the Royal College of Surgeons – which is considered the gold standard qualification for dental implants.
Dental implants are never really straight forward cases and will be significantly more difficult to complete than other treatments such as fillings, dental veneers etc. Because of this, there is a lot of planning involved before the dental implants are actually placed. The dentist will need to take into account the anatomy of the jaw and be able to understand where the best location for the dental implant should go, and at which angle (the plan can go through several alterations before we are ready to proceed with treatment – this is especially true for very complex cases.)
At the free consultation we will take an x-ray to give us a good idea on your bone structure & bone density. It is very important that for the site of where the dental implant will be going, is to have sufficient bone available. In some cases, we may need to do a bone graft before we are able to place the implant.
In some cases that require additional planning, we may need to arrange for a CT Scan to be taken. This will show the dentist the anatomy of the jaw (nerves, sinuses, bone etc), allowing them to prepare for the placement of the implant stage.
Even though there is no specialist register for dental implants, we do recommend that you take your time to discuss your case at the free consultation so you understand the whole treatment plan being offered to you. Call us today to book your free consultation.
