6 Month Smile and Invisalign are both considered to be cosmetic orthodontic treatments primarily used to align the front teeth and not correct the bite. Invisalign uses clear aligners which are changed periodically every 2 weeks until treatment is complete.
6 Month Smiles comprises of fixed tooth coloured brackets which are glued onto the fronts of the teeth and a tooth coloured wire is placed into the brackets.
Generally fixed braces provide more control of the teeth and therefor more movements can be done to individual teeth. The brackets of 6 Month Smiles allow us to rotate, twist, intrude and extrude teeth in any direction. This provides more sophisticated movement in comparison to clear aligners. Clear aligners, such as Invisalign, are excellent at performing certain movements but not every movement like 6 Month Smiles brackets. This generally means that 6 Months Smiles can treat a wider range of cases in comparison to Invisalign. Invisalign tends to be favoured in terms of being able to clean your teeth effectively and eating, as you can remove the aligners to eat and brush your teeth easily.
Generally 6 Month Smiles will complete a case 30-50% faster than Invisalign treatments. Shown below are two similar cases – the first case was treated with Invisalign and took 16 Months and the second case was treated with 6 Month Smiles and took approximately 6 months.
