TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder)

TMJ is an acute or chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint. This causes severe pain and discomfort in the back of the neck/head area.

TMJ can actually be caused by a number of problems, and may need further examination/help from other health professionals, and may not just need dental work.

Symptoms of TMJ

  • Biting or chewing discomfort
  • Pain in the neck and shoulders
  • Loss of hearing
  • Headaches
  • Clicking, grating, or popping sound when opening/closing mouth
  • Jaw pain and tenderness
  • Earache

Teeth disorder

Having problems with your teeth are a known cause to the TMJ dysfunction. This is due to the forces being placed on your teeth and the movement in your mouth. Changes of movement by your teeth can also occur, especially if you have lost teeth, this can further lead to developing a TMJ disorder.

Any changes in your mouth, due to decay, age, and poor dental hygiene, could all be contributing factors to developing TMJ.

Other Solutions

Dentistry may not be the answer to your TMJ disorder, there are also chiropractors who specialise in treating TMJ Dysfunction patients, through the use of increasing blood flow and movement to the affected areas.
