When you first have your veneers they are made out of a high quality strong material, that can last for many many years. Unfortunately, your lifestyle can have a direct impact on the longevity of your veneers. If you lead an active lifestyle which includes participating in contact sports, your veneers could be at risk of getting chipped, damaged, or even broken.
If you drink corrosive drinks such as, alcohol or soda, overtime the bond between tooth and veneer can weaken causing the veneer to fall off. Bad habits such as tooth grinding, nail chewing, or even chewing on items such as pen lids can cause the veneers to chip or wear down the edges (just like your natural teeth). Under no circumstances should you use your veneers or even your own teeth to open bottles or packets, as this can damage your teeth and veneers.
Porcelain veneers can last between 10-15 years, but it has been said that with proper care and attention, they can last up to 20 years!
Removing veneers is a very simple process that requires removing the bonding agent and any veneer surface off your tooth. We may need to slightly recontour your tooth to allow for a new veneer to be placed (not in all cases). We will then take impressions of your teeth which will be used to fabricate your new veneers at the lab. This can take 2 weeks to make depending on availability. In the mean time we will place a provisional veneer over your teeth so you will not be without a nice smile for those couple of weeks.
This will vary from patient to patient, but not everyone will be a suitable candidate to have new veneers (depending on their natural teeth). If this is the case, we will advise you on the best treatment to go ahead and discuss all the details with you.
If you are looking to replace your veneers or you would like to explore the option of getting new veeners for the first time, please do not hesitate to call us today to arrange your free consultation!
