What Is CEREC 3D?

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics and is a CAD/CAM 3D photography computer technology which allows the dentist to create dental restorations (crowns, onlays and inlays) while the patient waits.

How Does CEREC Work?

The CEREC process comprises of:

Design Phase

  • Photographs taken of area being treated
  • CEREC software turns the photo in a 3D model with an approximate shape of the restoration (based on comparisons to surrounding teeth)
  • The dentist will refine the measurements of the model using the CAD software

Restoration Phase

  • Design model’s information is sent to the milling machine
  • Milling machine creates the restoration out of a solid block of material
  • Restoration is then fitted to the tooth being treated

How Long Do Chairside Restorations Take?

Teeth restorations can take about one hour (depending on number of restorations needed). Your new teeth will blend in with your original teeth for a very natural and beautiful smile. The materials used to make the restorations are strong but safe (metal free) for the patient.
