What Are Zirconia Crowns?

Zirconia crowns are a dental restoration that are used when replacing missing teeth or to improve the appearance/function of exiting worn down teeth. They are often used in conjunction with Dental Implants (for stability), Dental Bridges or held in place with a dental bond/cement (over existing teeth).

Zirconia (Zirconium Oxide) is a type of strong ceramic material that can be used safely on Humans. Zirconia is a material that is regularly used in other medical aspects (e.g. artificial joints), because it offers high strength and durability.

Why Would You Need Zirconia Crowns?

There are many reasons why you may need to have a Zirconia Crown:

  • Missing tooth/teeth
  • Protect a weakened tooth (from decay)
  • Restore a worn down/broken tooth
  • Securely fitted to a dental implant as a restoration
  • Support & cover tooth with a large filling

What Are The Benefits of Zirconia?

Zirconia Crowns have some clear benefits over other types:

Strength – Zirconia is a much stronger ceramic material than other crowns, and as a result lasts longer.

Aesthetics – These crowns are not just made with function in mind, but they are made to blend in with your natural smile for beautiful results!

Minimal tooth preparation – When using Zirconia Crowns there is minimal preparation to the tooth, meaning if for any reason the crown does need to be removed, the original tooth is preserved more.

How Are Zirconia Crowns Fitted?

Like other dental crowns treatments, it involves two stages to complete the process:

Stage 1

Your teeth will be assessed and measurements will be taken for the crown. Before the dentist does anything to your teeth, they will always consult you first and explain what is happening. The preparation of the tooth that the crown is going on will involve cleaning and a slight reshaping.

Impressions of your teeth will be taken. This involves the patient opening their mouth and the dentist using putty to take an impression of the teeth. This will be used in creating the new crown at the dental laboratory.

Stage 2

When the crown comes back from the dental lab, it will be ready to be fitted. The crown will either be fitted onto an existing tooth that has been previously prepared, or it will be securely attached to a dental implant (if the patient was having a crown for a missing tooth).

When the crown is being fitted, the dentist will always ensure it looks natural and in the correct place before it is finally placed. The crown will then be given a final polish to ensure it looks beautiful.

Zirconia crowns and other types of crowns will require the same level of care and attention when cleaning as natural teeth.
