There are several choices open to adult customers who want to straighten their teeth. Two of the most familiar options are Invisalign and Six Month Smiles. These are both popular for different reasons, but there are advantages and disadvantages to each of these different types of dental braces.
This is one of the most commonly used types of braces. There are several advantages to this type of brace including the fact that they are removable and clear, benefiting adults who want to look good in social settings, but still want to straighten their teeth. Invisalign is also easier to clean and patients are more comfortable wearing them while eating. The major advantage is that the aligners can be removed at any point, so for example they can be taken out if the patient has a long speech or presentation where braces might affect how they speak.
However, this also throws up one of the major disadvantages, which is that Invisalign requires patient compliance, meaning that it has to be worn the majority of the time, and patients have to put the aligners in themselves. Another significant disadvantage is the length of time that Invisalign takes to straighten teeth, which can be significantly longer than fixed options.
Unlike Invisalign, Six Month Smiles consists of ceramic braces which are fixed into the teeth. This means that it is more visible, and cannot be removed until the teeth are straightened. Unlike large metal braces, they are made of tooth-coloured material which means that they are less visible than the traditional braes, but as they are fixed to the front of the teeth they will still be slightly noticeable. Many patients choose this option as it is quick and doesn’t rely on patients to comply.
If you want to know what the best types of braces are for your teeth, then you should take advice from your own dentist. Adults are more likely to want invisible braces, which is where Invisalign works well. Being removable also makes them perfect for adults who want to socialise without it being obvious that they are having their teeth straightened. However, Six Month Smile works faster, doesn’t rely on patients for compliance, and is generally faster and more cost-effective than Invisalign despite being fixed to the teeth while they are being straightened. We always advise to book in for a free consultation so we can discuss all the pro’s and cons with you.
